Just got back from our little mini-vacation to Hershey, PA with the kids. We had a lot to celebrate this past week. School is finally out for summer and we will officially have a teenager (what?!) living in our house! Gosh, the years fly by! I can still remember the moment we got home from the hospital with our new baby boy, not knowing what the heck to do with him! How could that tiny little “creature” now be standing almost as tall as me? Someone please stop time…like NOW!
No trip to Hershey would be complete without needing a bit of chocolate rehab upon return. I could swear my kids were going to need chocolate interventions by the time we got home! UGH! I’m in the process of detoxing them right now (haha!). In the meantime, I figured I’d dedicate this week’s post to a healthier way to satisfy that sweet tooth, like with this delicious smoothie bowl recipe that will either be your new favorite breakfast, dessert or both!
For starters, I use chocolate that doesn’t contain artificial ingredients and gobs of sugar. (I’m guessing that Mr. Hershey’s original chocolate recipe formulated back in the early 1900’s, probably didn’t contain all the garbage that it does now). By using cacao powder (the healthiest and purest form of chocolate you can consume) and dark chocolate shavings (which has minimal sugar) you can satisfy that chocolate craving without sacrificing your health.
And these sweet red cherries….
blended together with the flavor of chocolate and hazelnuts may be the perfect combo! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to pick up one of those fancy little cherry pitter devices and passed it by. So, I de-pitted them the old-fashioned way…with a knife and then sliced ’em up. I top the bowl with hemp and chia seeds, cherries, hazelnuts and some shavings of chocolate (you can get the shavings by passing the chocolate over a zester or grater). You could use berries, raisins, granola, cacao nibs, coconut or any type of nut you like. Adding a sprinkle of hemp or chia seeds to smoothies, fruits or cereals, is an easy way to add healthy protein, omega-3 fatty acids and fiber to your diet.
Now that summer is here, I’m really kicking my kitchen into full gear! I’m literally blown away by all the fresh, local produce and all the magnificent recipes popping up on all my favorite food blogs! There is just so much to cook, so little time! I thought I’d share some of the recipes that have made me drool recently…
