This week I’m excited to welcome Lauren Madden from Goodee™ as my guest blogger, to help kick off National Nutrition Month and introduce a helpful tool for those who may be struggling to get their kids to eat more fruits and vegetables. As a mom, I know first hand how challenging this may be, but I truly believe the Goodee™ Reward Board is an excellent way to engage children in healthy eating behaviors. See details at the end of this post for my giveaway and chance to win a free Goodee™ Reward Board and Lunch Box Notes!
Eat a Rainbow, Create Sunshine
March is National Nutrition Month, but all year long Goodee™ is passionate about helping families eat more healthfully. This month, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (www.eatright.org) is encouraging everyone to “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right,” and we couldn’t be more excited about this theme. We understand that taste is the #1 influencer of what we choose to eat, and we strive to make eating real, healthy foods easy and fun in your home and at school.
The way that we do this is through color. Kids are naturally drawn to colorful things, food included. We decided to start seeing what happened if we presented kids with the option of choosing colors to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other whole foods in their diet, rather than stressing the importance of nutritional value. A child is much more likely to eat broccoli or kale as part of a challenge to eat his or her green food for the day, rather than simply because it’s “good for you.” For both kids and adults, aesthetic pleasure and healthy eating come together through color. Here at Goodee™, we believe using color can guide kids toward healthy choices amidst all of the temptation to eat fried foods and artificial snacks.
Our goal is to offer parents fun and colorful tools that promote healthy eating for their kids. The Goodee™ products allow you to encourage healthier eating by involving kids in the process.
The Goodee™ Reward Board is designed to help chart your family’s progress toward eating a rainbow of colorful foods. With magnetic images of different foods, ranging from red strawberries to green spinach to tan almonds, you simply place the magnet of the food you ate on the board under the day of the week and the color category. For parents, this is an efficient way to visually monitor what colors you’re eating and, just as importantly, what colors you’re lacking in your diet. For kids, the Reward Board can be used as a reward system to make sure they’re getting all the benefits from a healthy diet. When they fill up a whole row of foods and colors for the week, you can reward by taking them out to their favorite park or to see a movie. The specific rewards are based on your own family’s choosing, but by creating a “game” and having your kid(s) work toward achieving the goal of eating food from every color on the Reward Board, they will have more fun and, in the process, want to eat more healthfully.
The Goodee™ Rainbow Food Journal App (available free through the App Store) is also designed to track your color intake and keep you accountable for getting a variety of healthful foods in your diet. Plus, with nutritional content information, you can discover the vitamins and minerals you’re eating with each food you add to the journal. The soon-to-be-released premium version will allow you to track your entire family’s food journals, giving a full spectrum over time of the colors prevalent and lacking in your family’s diet.
Even at school, eating a variety of foods is just as important as at home. That’s why we created The Goodee™ Lunch Box Notes to help your kids continue with their colorful progress when they’re at school, too. By creating this incentive at home to eat a rainbow of foods, your kids will want to continue their goal when at school and develop the habit of eating a range of colors each day. We need to appeal to the right brain more often by appealing to our senses. No more stats, calorie-counting or conflicting nutritional information. Think, see and eat in color, and notice how eating a rainbow will create a lifetime of sunshine for both you and your kids.
