There are a few stand out flavors that immediately take me back to my childhood summers…orange creamsicle was one of my favorites. I can still remember popping the ice cream bar out of the freezer after a long afternoon of swimming and playing in the yard. Just the thought of it and…BAM! I’m 10 years old again! I just loved the combination of rich cream with the tart fruitiness of the orange. This week I brought those memories back to life in a healthier, nutritionally pumped up smoothie!
I use real oranges, thick, rich, creamy yogurt, almond milk and a touch of vanilla to give it that classic creamsicle taste. But in order to make it really satisfying, I threw in some oat bran and blended it into the smoothie. I used Bob’s Red Mill Oatbran Cereal. The benefits of oat bran are tremendous. Oat bran has cholesterol lowering properties, helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and aids in promoting weight loss by keeping you feeling fuller for longer periods of time.
I top off the smoothie with a mint leaf and a thin piece of orange peel for an added burst of refreshing flavor which also adds an eye catching garnish. I hope this smoothie brings you back in time, like it does for me…even if just for a bit!
